The painting currently shown at the Arkansas Art Center, but it originally belongs to the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The artist used silkscreen ink, spray enamel and graphite on canvas. The dimensions of the painting are (77 x 81in.) so it’s large. The painting with the repeated pattern makes a sense of unity and different colors shows variety. It represents the statue of liberty standing face on and the sea is behind her. The artist used vibrant colors with a high degree of accuracy. Most the image color is cool hue of blue combined with blood red.
We can notice the warm hue of blood red in the top left corner as well. The blue and the red create a beautiful contrast. Talking about the colors, the contrast between the sky and the sea shows that the picture might been alerted. Andy used Pop Art technique and it considered as the first of its kind. The combination of the colors and the pattern gave the panting a 3D effect. The contrast of the blue and blood red played a big role making this effect.
Andy Warhol considered as one of the first artist who used Pop Arts in their paintings. The colors, lines and the shapes in this art piece all combined to share a story behind the painting. Andy Warhol painted this painting during the civil rights movement, so it has a connection to the American history. It represents the freedom after the Civil War in America. This painting is also a symbol of hope for a lot of immigrants came to the united states. In about three fourths of the rectangles there is a darker blue cloud and its different than the blue color in the torch and the face of the statue. the statue appears more whiter in the left bottom than it’s in the top. The ocean is darker than the statue and the sky and that creates the horizon line behind her. The usage of primary colors with different degrees of hue, warm and cold gave the image variety and unity. The right side of the painting have more weight and that because of the vibrant red color used in the right of the panting, in the other side the red color is a little bit faded. The faded coloron the left create a sense the painting has been dragged from the top right corner. The torch the statue holds create a vertical line towards the sky, this line creates a Movement to the top, it leads the eye to the top of the statue. The horizontal line between the ocean and the sky in every picture mixed up to create a feeling that the whole painting is wide. Beside the line that separate the sky and the ocean, there are some staple and unstable lines in the ocean that create a movement if the water behind the statue. left000If we talked about the balance in this work it will be symmetrical because of the repetition and the pattern, but in the same way it is slightly asymmetrical because of the red color in the top left and other areas which caused by tissue box effect. Symmetry in this painting represent the unity. The elements and the shapes of this painting shown as shadows and because of that rectangle look like as they are moving like a film strip. The artist made the Statue of Liberty look very small by repeating it 12 times across the painting. Andy Warhol is an American artist who was one of the first artist who used visual movement art known as Pop Art. This painting has a big connection with American history. As example the repetition in the painting describes how is lifestyle among Americans is different and each one is living a different life in the same country. The variety in colors and hue represent the variety of experiences Americans and immigrants went through. The empty area in the left and the top left corner represent the expectations of immigrants before they come to America and it describes the American dream as well.
