With the development of media online, there is no future for the radio. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Write a complete essay of at least 300 words.
A decade ago, my weekends were all about flicking through 100 pages of a magazine to figure out which radio station my favorite band would be on and adjusting the frequency crazily, just to listen to some music. The current digital era with such drastic development of media online has led people to predict that we will not experience such things in the near future because the radio will be nowhere to be seen soon.
I strongly support that point of view. Radio should be viewed as a disposable medium.
Firstly, digital media brings much greater user experience compared to the radio. Years ago, if people wanted to listen to a random music track, they either had to buy a whole CD or turn on the radio with their fingers crossed. Things have been revolutionized over the past decade.
Every single song is just a click away on online music platforms which also suggest loads of similar tracks in the recommendation section. Moreover, people would rather have a lazy lie-down on the bed listening to their self-made playlist rather than listen to a random DJ’s soundtrack stream that keeps getting interrupted by tons of weird advertisements and annoying conversations. In addition, instead of sitting in the corner trying to wait for the radio’s weather forecast, anyone can just ask Alexa or Google for weather reports of every part of the world.
Such artificial intelligence with thousands of satellites provides people a massive amount of data about all weather features. Holding the radio in the hand will just prevent us from such fantastic user experiences.
Secondly, the radio is no longer able to earn enough revenue to survive. Advertising is the key source of income for radio broadcasters, which accounts for an average 80% of the total revenue. However, commercial radio is suffering from a large decline in the number of listeners. There are people out there who just want to enjoy some music, not unwanted advertisements, so they decide to reach for media online. It is common to see millions of podcast lovers, Spotify Premium subscribers or Deezer users out there but not so many radio listeners anymore. Most of the people who invested in radio stations in the late 90’s must be questioning their choices. Digital services, especially streaming platforms, have become the alternative investment of such investors. Car makers have also started to create marginalization on the radio on their dashboards, trying to abandon the medium. In-car media screens allow easier access to platforms like Apple Music, Pandora, and iTunes. AM/FM controls are now placed far below the center of the screens, which decreases radio listenership. The radio cannot make as much money as it used to; that’s why people have started to avoid it.
There are still many radio lovers nowadays. They insist that the radio is still alive and kicking since it is widely accessed by people who are finding some pieces of news, music and entertainment. However, such things can be much more easily found on any source of online media, with even a larger number of choices. Moreover, media online provides not only audio communications but also visual ones, which makes the radio completely subordinate.
I do not think the radio has much of a future. The truth may be saddening, but the existence of the radio should just be a beautiful part of everyone’s childhood. They have to accept that the radio will never beat how powerful digital media is. People should appreciate the fact that the only effort required on every daily task these days is just flicking a switch on.
