Capability management is an act or an approach toward the management of an organization which is a collection of capabilities that are put in place to earn revenues for the business and aid the firm to compete with other firms in the industry. For any business or an organization to be successful in the industry, it has to consider its capability management and strive to make it better regarding its performance. When the firm is carrying out its activities, it has to consider the impact of its processes on the environment and to its stakeholders (Schwartz, 2017).
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business model which is a self-regulating that aids the firm to be responsible for its activities. It enables the organization to be socially accountable for its activities, its investors and stakeholders, its employee, customers and environment at large. CSR allows the firms to be responsible and conscious of the types of impact they have on social, economic, and environmental (Tai and Chuang,2014). A company that has to embrace CSR means that it carries its processes in ways that it encompasses and enhance community, society, and environment rather than polluting it or negatively affecting them. For any business to be successful in its activities, it requires to manage its departments in such a way that they operate toward the intended goal.
This report aims to critically address the corporate social responsibility issues, different approaches that an organization can use toward managing its departmental team performance and fundamental Maori values basing the argument on Koper Resource Company (KRC), one of mining organization in Austria.
Team management is the act of having necessary resources and skill to organize a group of people undertaking the same goal. The team leader should be able to effectively communicate and have effective interpersonal skills so as to effectively resolve issues arising in the team when under taking any project.
Effective communication involves use of both verbal and non-verbal mechanism of passing information in the manner that is better understood. The verbal communication involves use of word of mouth to communicate. The team taking part in exploration process should communicate one language to minimize the language barrier among the members (McWilliams,2015). I will narrate the history about the area of study to the team members using verbal communication to make some clarifications from non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication involves using of secondary resources to pass information such as books, magazines and maps or electrotonic media such as pictures, video or audio. The non-verbal communication mechanism will be used to give detailed information about the area of exploration. I will provide the teammates with pictures, maps and books about the area of study so that the team can have enough details about the area of study such as direction, climate, and its population.
As the team leader I will ensure that I give the teammate space to air their view on how we should carry out the activities. As team leader I will involve every member in decision making to have their view accommodated (Suliman, Al-khatib and Thomas,2016). The feedback from the individual in the group will enable the team to have a broad view of the area of study. Having several feedbacks from different members in the team, it will lead us to a forum of questioning. It is where the members of the team consult each other about their different views and can up with the best view or where the team members air their query to their leader for clarification. Questioning will enable the team to understand area of study in a better way and enables them to understand what is expected of them (Carrol,2015).
As the team leader I will provide the necessary information about the area of study. The information about the location of area of study, the community living there, the climate in area, tools required, the goal of the process, the cost involved and the time limit of carrying out the research.
Collaboration and Compromise
Collaboration is the act where to parties come up together to work toward certain common goal. By educating the community, it will enable the community living in the field of study to know what the team is exploring and this will encourage the community to help in exploration activity. The community should also be educated on the importance of research and extraction of copper (Pillai,2016). The community should be made aware of the advantages such as job opportunities and disadvantages of mining of copper if the reserves are enough to be extracted.
The Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird should be assured that the team under study will conserve the environment during its process of exploration. As the PED I will request their recommendation on how they expect the research to be carried and allow them to set their limits which I will make sure are met.
Effective Negotiation
Use of verbal and non-verbal communication should be used. There are two parties that has to be involved before the exploration process takes place. The parties involved are the community living in the area of study and the Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird. The community will taught the importance of the process and its impact (Wangener and Disparte, 2016). The community will also be assured that the team under study will conserve the environment. The Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird will be assured that the group taking part in the process of exploration will conserve the environment. The Department will be given the chance to take part in decision making involving the activities of exploration
Environmental
The activities of a firm sometimes can have an impact on the environment which can result in a negative impact on the environment. During exploration where part of the land is set aside to carry out a study of land will result in soil pollution. It occurs when the team under investigation uses chemicals during the study which comes to contact with soil which results in soil pollution (Poussenkora et al.,2016). The team will also use heavy machines which emits a lot of carbon in the air resulting in air pollution. The air pollution will impact the life of the community living in the area under study. Soil pollution can lead to water pollution which will threaten the lives of water creatures and lives of the communities that depend on those water bodies.
If the team carrying out the exploration decide to carry its activities in the National park in the area of study, it will result to deforestation, and putting the lives of wild animals at risk as result of pollution involved in the process (Cao, 2017). It can lead to the death of wild animals and the plants in the forest.
The Government’s Role
The government has its role in the Corporate Social Responsibility in the business industry. The government involves itself in corporate social responsibility to encourage the firm in the country also to take part thus helping them to be more responsible in their activities and processes and define methodologies to be used that will establish a sense of being responsible towards the firm’s operations (Vertigans, and Idowu, 2017).
In the exploration process, the government involves its self by giving licensing to the firms to carry out the process. The license clearly defines the terms and conditions to follow during the exploration process (Cheng, Loannou and Serafeim,2014). The government should also intervene to solve the challenge facing the team carrying out the exploration and New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird which is protecting against the activity of exploring the National Park in the area of study.
Disclosure
CSR disclosure is the provision of data on firms’ social performance and environmental performance. During the process of exploration in the area under study, we will provide the necessary information and data required to explain our research process. The first thing to disclose is the license from the government that proofs that the team is permitted to carry out the exploration (Salib et al.,2015). It as the team leader of team doing the exploration would educate the community about the importance of the process of the exploration process and the impact it has on their social and economic life. I will make them of job opportunities that will result from the extraction of copper in the area. Also, make the community living in the area study aware of the negative impact such displacement in case the extraction of copper takes place in the area.
Involvement in Community Education
Educating the community about the firm activities enables them to understand what the firm is doing and the impact on their social, political and economic lives. Having the community involved in the process creates a sense of belonging to the population living in the area of study. It helps the community to understand that you value their contribution in the process. As the leader who is leading the process of exploration, I would make sure that the population living in the area of study are fully educated about the full operation of the research. The team will also be ready to receive any suggestion from the community that they feel they should be changed in exploration activities. An open forum will be created to solve any conflict that may arise during and even after the process (Milosevic, Uhl-Bien and Bass,2015). In case some of the community will be displaced from their homes, the team will contact the government to come up with a solution to this problem such helping the community to move, providing them with necessary resources such building houses and provide essential information on how the government is going to compensate them.
The community will be taught how the team is taking measures to ensure that negative impact as a result of the exploration process is minimal. The group will educate the community on how it’s striving to reduce air, soil and water pollution (Bolman and Deal,2017). The importance of the exploration process will be made aware of the community how it can impact their lives.
The team will also educate the community the impact of the exploration process to their lives. The community will be made aware of the area where the exploration process will be taking place so that they don’t interfere with the exploration process.
Workforce Diversity
Workforce diversity is where workers in a given organization have a wide variety of experiences and characteristics. The workers may be having different features such as age, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion and ability (Skelcher and Smith,2015). A firm with workforce diversity enjoys the variety of skill from its workers who influences the better performance of the firm.
During the exploration process, the is a requirement of workforce diversity required to enable the process to be a success. The process requires individual with better information about the area of exploration-the community living in the area under exploration, the skilled workers to carry out the exploration process. The community will be involved in providing the necessary labor required during the research (Salas, prince, Baker and Shrestha,2017). It will enable the community to be part of the process and have a sense of belonging in the project as it has created job opportunities for the community. The community will also carry out the process careful to protect the resources that surround them. Having the community working together with the team carrying out the exploration process will promote teamwork between the community and the team carrying out the exploration process in the area of exploration (Helmreich and Schaefer, 2018).
Having skilled personnel carrying out the exploration process will enable the exploration process to occur as per expectation and even leaving the area under exploration better than the way they found it. The company carrying out the exploration process can opt to take part in conserving the environment by planting trees in the natural park, clean water bodies in the area and educate the community the mechanism of conserving the environment. The skilled personnel will make sure that the process is carried out with few negative impacts on the environment such as air, water and land pollution in the air.
The following is one of action that can be put in place to meet the expectation of all the stakeholders. The first stakeholders are the community living in the area where the exploration is taking place. The team taking part in research should ensure that there a few or zero pollution in the area, educate the community on the importance of the exploration and its impact on their lives. The second stakeholder is the New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird which is protesting against the exploration in the National park. The team can opt not to carry out the exploration in the park or can guarantee Department of Conservation with Forest and Bird that the process will have little impact on the park (D’innocenzo, Mathieus and Kukenberger,2016). The team should also promise to conserve the environment during the process and even take part in the tree planting process after the exploration process. The last stakeholders are the government and the company which the team is working for. The team should work per terms and conditions of the license from the government and rules and regulation from the company.
For the exploration process to be a success, several approaches are necessary to manage departmental team performances. The following are approaches that can be applied.
The SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. The team should set realistic goals to be achieved in a certain period as per SMART goal. The goal should be within the time limit, cost and scope. The team should set the time limit required for the exploration process to be completed. There should be enough time allocation to ensure that the process of exploration is entirely carried out to have enough knowledge on the quantities of copper reserves in the area of research (Howard, turban and Hurley, 2016). Enough resources should be allocated to the team to ensure that they have every tool they require during the process. The underestimation cost should be discouraged because it can lead to unsuccessful exploration.
The team carrying out the exploration process should undertake training to acquire the necessary skills to carry out the process. The training will enable the group to understand what is expected of them in advance before taking part in the actual process (Jagger, Pattanayak, Pfaff and Sills,2016). The team should be taught how to relate to the community in the area of exploration, how to conserve the environment and how to work per the terms and conditions are given to them. It will as a motivation factor to all department involved in the exploration process.
The leadership in every organization determines its success. Having able leader will enable the firm to meet its goal as he/she acts as a role model to the workers serving as motivation factor in the organization. Able leadership in the process of exploration will enable the firm to operate with the time limit, scope and cost of the project (Ponton, Osbourne, Greenwood and Thompson, 2018). The team leader should be aware of conflict solving mechanism to solve any challenge that may occur during the process such as the use of dialogue.
Manaakitanga
The Manaakitanga is a word that can be defined as hospitality which is a traditional value that deals with the way of hosting visitors generous. The team carrying out exploitation should expect reception from the community living in the area having in the mind that the community value visitors (Soukup et al.,2016). The team should expect cooperation and support from the community living in the area.
Kaitiakitanga
It deals with ways of managing the environment. The team undertaking the exploration process should do it in a way that it conserves the environment. The team should avoid pollution and deforestation in the National park to encourage community living in this area to support their activities during the exploration. Conserving the environment will enable all the stakeholders to support their activities (Soucie, Jia, Zhu and Pratt,2018).
Whanaungatanga
Whanaungatanga is a sense of belonging that is brought by people working together in harmony as a community. The team taking part in the exploration process should involve the community in the exploration process to create a sense of belonging in the community. It will make the community free being part of the process. The team should also involve the National park management in the process so that it can oversee the team process and give suggestions where necessary. Involving all stakeholders will enable the process to be a success.
Conclusion
Corporate social responsibility helps firms and organization to be more responsible for their activities. It enables the firms to consider their impact on the environment, social and economical of all its stakeholders. It also encourages companies and organization to take part in activities that are not within the scope of the firm (Gold, Muthuri and Reiner,2018). The company may engage in environmental conservation, charity work in the community. It enables the firm to build its reputation in the society thus increasing its number of customers due to increased reputation.
All firms and organization should involve itself in corporate social responsibility to ensure all stakeholders are satisfied with their activities and this will be led to improved environmental conservation and improve stakeholder’s satisfaction
