I know exactly what I am feeling and why I am feeling that way. I am a person who flies through many emotions a day, but have a reason for all of them. Whether I am happy or sad, I am able to notice that emotion, realize why I am feeling that way, and change it around if need be.
This is something I have always struggled with throughout my life. I struggle with this when I am ecstatic…or when I am angry. When I am full of joy and happiness, I never think before I act. I am loud, giggly, jumpy, and loveable. Maybe this bothers other? Maybe this crosses personal boundaries? Maybe this aggravates others? Being the loud and touchy person is not who I want to be. When it comes to being angry, I have a tendency to say the first thing that comes to mind.
Not that it’s insanely horrible, but there are things I wish I could take back or say differently. After calming down, I realize that many things can be prevented by just how I react. I know it’s an issue and it’s something I will one day conquer.
I am most definitely aware of my own behavior and how that behavior makes other people feel.
I am able to differentiate between good and bad behavior of mine, as well as how it’s making others feel so I can turn it around if need be. My goal is to make others feel welcome and comfortable, not worried or uncomfortable. I am able to notice those signs.
This is one that affects me only in certain places. When I am at work during stressful times, it is something I am able to do perfectly. I compensate for the stressful times by flipping my emotions around to help cope with whatever is going on. I am very focused on what I do and would do anything I can to prevent errors and keep my patients safe. When I am not at work, I have a hard time controlling my emotions. I sometimes act in a way that I do not want to act, but cannot really change in that moment. For example, with my boyfriend I get upset over small things that I know do not mater, but I stay that way because I’m able to…I guess. I one day want to 100% control any feeling I have, and to change it right away if need be, to prevent issues.
I most definitely do express myself in an acceptable matter, but not always. I handle frustration at work differently than I do at home, but it’s never completely out of order. I sometimes yell and say things I do not mean, and that is definitely not in an acceptable manner. It has to do more or so with anger issues, which will one day be solved because I am working harder and learning more for ways I can express myself acceptedly.
Definitely! After working in customer service for the last 5 years, it is something that I have mastered when it comes to dealing with others. I know the appropriate words to say, as well as handling the certain situation in the best and easiest way. It may not always go in the right direction in the end, but I am most definitely able to do my part in the situation.
Self-love and self-confidence has been my biggest insecurity since as long as I could remember. I do not push myself as hard as I can, I am lazy, and I rely on others for my happiness and success. Don’t get me wrong, I do what I need to do, but I always need an extra boost to get there. I have come a very long way, but there is always improvement needed. I hope to one day be 100% independent and to say I did it all by own, with the help of me, myself, and I.
I definitely do feel for other people. I care too much and get myself caught in way too easily. I absolutely love being the person people go to when they need advice, comfort, or someone to listen. Empathy vs. sympathy is something I correlate together too often, so it’s something I need to separate but I love caring for others and being someone they need!
This relates to the comment above. For example, I do correlate sympathy and empathy, but never for work. I can identify what emotion to show towards a family member when something has gone wrong. As nurses, we can be empathetic, but never sympathetic. I effectively use these interchangeably when it is appropriate. Whether that be at home, work, or school. When it comes to other emotions, I have a tougher time separating them and using them effectively because I experience new situations everyday in my life.
I wouldn’t necessarily think others think this about me. It’s tough because I would love to be an optimistic person, but I don’t always think the best for myself. For others, of course! I’m always hoping and wishing the best, even if it may not be possible but there is always a chance. For myself, I think way too negatively about myself and my skills. It’s an issue I’ve always dealt with myself but one day, I will be the most confident person out there!
A nursing shortage is coming its way to the United States by the year of 2022. Because of the shortage of nurses, think about the ultimate stress on current nurses? American Nurses Association (n.d.) claims “By 2022, there will be far more registered nurse jobs available than any other profession, at more than 100,000 per year. With more than 500,000 seasoned RNs anticipated to retire by 2022.” (Para. 5). It is critical to expand certain specialty areas to make up for all the care that is going to be given with such short amount of nurses. Do your share and join the team!
There are many trends from the past and present that have changed completely. For example, my favorite, technology. There has always been a rapid growth in technology as it can relate to the speed and capacity of our machines, imaging storage and interpretation, communication with providers, surgical procedures, specimen interpretation and collection, etc. Our environment is continuously changing and it’s important that our medical technology keeps up with the speed as it is extremely important for medical professionals to provide the best and safe patient care possible.
There are numerous professional nursing organizations all around the world that we, as nurses, can be apart of. I’d like to interpret a nursing organization as professionals who have come together to work as a group for multiple different reasons. According to Jennifer H. Matthews (2012), reasons include “specialized competencies and practitioners who are effective in practicing the professional role, dedication to raise the standards of the profession’s education and practice, availability of professional education as a life-long process and mechanisms to advance the education of professionals established by the profession, approval of the authority sanctioned by a broader community or society, etc.” (Para. 4). Some of the organizations are divided and talk about setting-specific nursing, specific disorders, ethnic and cultural differences, or educational level differences. According to NCSBN (2019) “BONs achieve this mission by outlining the standards for safe nursing care and issuing licenses to practice nursing. Once a license is issued, the board’s job continues by monitoring licensees’ compliance to jurisdictional laws and taking action against the licenses of those nurses who have exhibited unsafe nursing practice.” (Para. 2). Each state has its own rules and regulations as to what they expect regarding nursing, license, etc. This is the difference between the BON and professional organizations.
There are many factors that impact new graduate nurses into their professional nursing role. As a future graduate nurse, there are a few factors I keep in mind when looking for a future job. The main impact I think of is nurse bullying. Feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, and in the way, is one way that nurses have a difficult time transitioning. On top of the bullying, there is a lack of access to experienced coaches and preceptors as there are many fresh nurses on the floor with zero clinical experience. Not that this is an issue, but this does not prepare graduate nurses with the experience knowledge needed to help them succeed. Not having relationships where they feel comfortable and welcomed, can lead to anxiety, stress over-load and fear. This is not very helpful with the extreme shortage of nurses arising, so it is our job as nurses to prevent this from happening, as well as speaking and standing up for our own.
A manager has authority to supervise employees and are held formally responsible for the quality, quantity, and cost of the work that the employees produce. Leadership skills are not only needed for leaders, but also for managers. Unfortunately, managers do not need leadership skills because they are of higher authority, but is a skill that all managers should have, so a company is able to exert a strong and positive workforce. On the other hand, leaders are the ones that lead the group, but aren’t necessarily managers. Leaders guide, motivate, and inspire employees, as well as being persuading and influential to these employees. Management and leaderships skills complete each other. For my vision, I would love to see managers with extravagant leadership skills, as well as everyone being a leader in their own way. This will create a strong bond between all the employees, as well as having a strong and positive workforce.
Developing research for our patients is what nursing is all about. As stated below, evidence-based practice is used for new up-to-date interventions, cost saving procedures, and safe and successful approaches. Completing research can help you for a new approach. For example, healthy meal programs for obese adolescents, comparing treatment strategies, comparisons between minority groups and ethnic populations, testing various new techniques, early detection, prevention, and treatment, etc. By contributing nursing research to nursing practice has increasingly advanced our knowledge on common diseases, as well as finding a quick, safe, and non-costly approach. Our goal is to provide the best practice for our patients!
There is a great increase in using evidence-based practice related to nursing. Evidence-based practice is that interventions are based on data from up-to-date research, that show the data is appropriate for our time and is successful. It is important to use evidence-based practice because our world is continuously changing. Our clients are knowledgeable now about current health-care issues and want every possible approach and knowledge from our providers. Medical professionals are used to accustomed practices, but it is time to drift away from accustomed practices, and create new up-to-date practices for our patients. After finding a current and “successful” intervention, it is our job to make sure the evidence is the best approach for our clients and their outcome. Why not use research that is successful, up-to-date, and beneficial, versus old, out dated procedures, for our patients?
I have never created a portfolio or resume before, so this is something I am extremely excited to work on! My portfolio is going to consist of all of my achievements, hard work, and projects I have created throughout my time at Bryant & Stratton. I am going to include evidence-based practice projects, my clinical skills that I have mastered, as well as evaluations from all my professors that have seen my hard work and sweat. This is a good piece to include into my last semester as it will be something that is important when applying to a future dream job.
I would say that I am at a 7, on a scale of 1-10 for my preparedness to take the NCLEX-RN. There is always something to learn, and I believe this semester is the one that is going to give it to me. This semester I am going to focus on the topics that I struggle with the most and focus on numerous practice questions that’ll prepare me for their questions. After my Medical-Surgical 2 class on September 19th, I will see where I stand when it comes to my chances of passing the NCLEX-RN!
