Internet has introduced different tools and techniques to the commoners that they can use for the learn, promote, share and similar activities. The discussed advantage of the internet has received further boost since the introduction of the social media platforms. Social media platforms offer the user with the opportunity to share their feelings & activities, meet new people, promote their products, learn places or tools that can teach users different skills, savour at a global stage and multiple others. The discussed advantage offered by the social media platforms have attracted a lot of traffic globally. Hence, looking at the demand new social media platforms are making their way into the digital world and they are establishing themselves fast. Some of the most prominent social media platforms are Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and multiple other however, the most well-established and popular platform is Facebook. The discussed paper will offer an analysis over the Facebook along with its advantage and limitations, post which an idea as a competitor for the subject (Facebook) will be discussed. The specifications, requirements and other crucial aspects of the proposal will be discussed before summarising the paper to conclude the paper along with some recommendations for the Facebook.
Facebook was launched on 4th of February 2004 by a college student of Harvard University named Mark Zuckerberg along with one of his fellow mates Eduardo Saverin and was launched by the name of thefacebook.com. However, the base for the development was established in 2003, when Zuckerberg developed FaceMash in the second year of his college. However, the FaceMash was banned and Zuckerberg faced academic prohabation for 6 months. Later, after Zuckerberg developed Facebook and initially, it was limited within the Harvard university campus which was later expanded to include the colleges and universities in the region. The company moved its base of operations to Palo Alto, California in the month of June of 2004 “The” was dropped from the name of the company in the year 2005 and by the end of the year facebook.com has over 6 million users. In the year of 2005-2006 Facebook expanded itself from the region to colleges around US, UK, Australia, Canada and other until 26th September 2006 when they opened it for all those who were over 13 years and had a valid e-mail address. October 2008 witnessed the establishment of Facebook’s international headquarter at Dublin, Ireland. Facebook launched its mobile application in 2012 and in the same year it launched its IPO (Initial Public Offering).
The financial history of the subject initiated with Zuckerberg and Saverin investing their own money to maintain the site. Later they started flashing ads to earn and maintain the subject until an investment of $500,000 was received from Peter Thiel. Later Accel Investment invested in the venture in the year 2005 followed by Greylock investment in 2006 and after that investments from Microsoft and other major giants assisted the subject in establishing itself.
The subject of the paper is available on different platform and in different modes. The subject has its website, mobile application on IOS, Android, Windows and other operating platforms. Hence, the analysis of the subject has been done for website and mobile application individually. The mobile application available on Android platform has been analysed.
The Android mobile application version of Facebook is designed well in its purpose however, it may seem a little complex for the first time user as the initial screen attached below can be taken as reference and cites that it needs improvement. The user may be unaware of the icons and additionally, the application also does have a search option however, the option is of no assistance if a user deems to search for options such as messaging, posting and other basic features of the subject. The search option instead shows results for the posts or people along with pages and groups that are available on the platform. The library formatting, responsive designing along with keyboard support and search options are some of the major perks of the application design that greatly supports the users.
The website version of the Facebook is also well designed; however, it lacks library formatting of the options where one option contains may sub-options. Additionally, the lack of drag drown option is also a negative aspect of the website. Apart from the above discussed negative traits, the addition of features such as a filter to control the fake news or a tick mark to authenticate the validity of reliable source such as twitter would be of great assistance in limiting the fake news from going viral. Apart from them, the occasional users of Facebook would find the website design greatly comfortable because of easy visibility. On the contrary, regular users may find it difficult to shuffle through the large number of options that are available to them such different pages, groups, games and similarly multiple others.
Facebook has its share of viability and they are related to different genres such as business, social life, health and others. Robert Kraut, a social psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University along with other PhD of Data Science, Moira Burke conducted two tests to determine the effect of internet on the users. The first test that was conducted in the 90’s revealed that the users of web service were getting more depressed after using the internet. The reason for the depression was laid on the initial stage of internet age and lack of adequate policy along with safety and other crucial measures. However, the second test that was conducted in 2011 revealed that the people who use internet were less depressed than those who does not. The reason for the same was laid on social media platforms as they enabled the users to relax more. The study was conducted on the users of Facebook and hence, it would be adequate to state that Facebook can offer health benefits. Additionally, the subject enables its users to share ideas and their opinion which can open different routes for the future. Facebook business and advertising are also proving to be of great assistance for the corporate world. Other benefits include meeting with new people, a channel to interact globally and multiple others. Hence, it would be adequate to state that Facebook has is viable depending upon the context in which it is used.
The section above has discussed the viability of the subject however, it also has its share of limitations and downsides. Most of the downsides of the subject are associated with the concept of sociology or psychology. Addiction to the subject has forced the users to spend more time on the digital means rather than the physical world which influences their real life. Bullying is another downside of the subject. Due to excessive freedom offered by the subject and lack of adequate means to justify the reliability of a source, Facebook has emerged as one of the top sources for bullying. From commoners to celebrities anyone can be and are being bullied other users and Facebook is doing no attempt to stop it. The subject also offers very weak security and privacy as anyone can create an account on the subject with a phone number and email id (note: an individual can own mobile numbers and email ids). The discussed downside of the subject has led to formulation of multiple fake accounts and in the process acts as a source for illegal and unethical activities. Hence, it can be stated that Facebook has its own share of downsides, however most of them depends upon the perception and attitude of the users.
Facebook has been a leader in the social media field, however, it is now facing tough challenge from other platforms. It is because of some of improvements that the subject needs to include to ensure that it is sustainable in nature and enjoy competitive advantage. If the author of the paper would have proposed a similar idea than the focus would had been cited more on the security, privacy and ease of use. The following sub-sections have offered an idea into the considerations, requirements and market convenience of the proposed idea.
The following are the key features will be included as part of the proposed idea and they have been discussed below along with the cost and resources that will be needed to develop and integrate them together. The cost that had been discussed are cost for the basic versions of the components and features of the proposed idea.
The functions and features discussed above are similar to that of the subject, however, the following functions and features would be added to the proposed website.
Other features can also be added to the proposed idea depending upon the reviews of the users. The total cost including the maintenance cost (estimated at $ 500 per month or $ 6000 yearly) and other expenses such as the coding, project planning, domain buying and other would fall under the domain of $ 27,000 to $ 40,000.
Facebook is the biggest social media platform and the discussed proposal is inspired from the same. However, the flaws or improvements that the subject needs to consider has been cited adequate attention which makes the proposed source more reliable. Additionally, the case of Facebook Cambridge Analytica, the security and privacy has emerged as one of the primary concerns for the social media users and hence, the strong security features of the proposed platform makes it more appealing to the users. The encrypted VoIP, facial recognition and other security features are the key that will be promoted as key marketing strategy for the market.
Conclusion
The discussion above can be summarised to state that Facebook is one of the most dominant force as a product in the market. It is because, the subject has upgraded itself from being a communication platform for Harvard university in 2014 to the largest virtual country of 2018. The product has offered services for free to the commoners while offering business tools and other tools for professionals that comes at a price. However, there are some downsides of the product that can be utilised to offer a product that along with offering the pros of the discussed product also mitigates the loopholes. One of such major loophole has been identified in the security and privacy of the product and hence based upon the security and other loopholes, an idea for a social media platform has been discussed. The proposed platform has taken security measures such as encrypted VoIP and facial recognitions to enhance the platform. Additionally, the source and content verification feature will also mitigate the number of illegal and unethical activities that are developed due to sharing of fake posts. The requirements and market aspects of the product has also been discussed to ensure the feasibility of the product. Hence, the report can be summarised to conclude that Facebook is a dominant force of internet however, adopting the following recommendations can offer it sustainability and competitive advantage.
