Critical analysis of the technological innovations and carbon emission.
Background of the study:
There have been many researches about the effects of the advancement of technology. Some of which are beneficial and some of them cause side effects towards the people and the environment. One such factor is the emission of carbon which is due to the technological innovations of our daily lives. There are many sources of carbon emission, which would be natural or even artificial. However as per the recent studies, electronic devices and automobiles are two of the most contributing factors when it comes to carbon emission.
Statement of the problem
In recent times, the cause for the increase in the emission of carbon has increased in a rapid pace day by the day. As recent studies show, the daily use of electronic devices is causing as much too global warming as the entire aviation industry. An average of 3% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the combined result of all the media, telecommunication and the entertainment industries. Out of that, it can be identified as 1.3% of the IT and telecommunications industry and 1.7% of the media and entertainment sector. It has been stated that both the industries, together produces an estimate of 1.4 billion tons of C02 emission.
Rationale of the research:
The importance of this study is to understand the causes of the emission of carbon from electronic devices and automobiles. This is an issue to the overall environment and the lives of many species all over the world. According to (Ozturk and Acaravci 2013) it is stated that the carbon footprints of electronic devices can rival to the same amount of carbon emission of jumbo jets. On the other hand, the personal vehicles used by us causes nearly of 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global warming factors for every gallon of gas. It is said that nearly 28.5% of the greenhouse gas emission is from transportation.
Research aims and objectives:
The aim of this study is to understand the reasons and the measures to reduce the effects of carbon emission. This objective if this case study is to:
Research questions.
Impact of industries based on electrical devices and transportation for carbon emission.
According to Gelenbe and Caseau, (2015), this is to understand the impact of carbon emission on information technologies, which are responsible largely when it comes to the reason for emission from electronic devices. As per their studies, 4.7 percent of the world’s electrical energy was released into the atmosphere and out of that roughly 1.7 percent of the total CO2 emission. Due to the high use of electronic devices these industries result in the overall changes in the virtual work and learning of organizations, these make changes in the environment due to high carbon emission. Automobile on the other hand produces pollution and carbon emission as well.
According to Benhelal et al. (2013), the average number of miles travelled on a vehicle causes a tremendous amount of carbon emission. As per studies global warming possesses the potential to make massive changes in the temperature. It is stated that carbon emission will increase the temperature by 10 folds few years down the line. As of 2015, the total amount of CO2 emission increased since the year of 2010. The major causes for the increase were due to road traffic, passenger freight, and change of temperature. As per (Feng, Chen and Zhang, 2013) In European countries, mainly due to the cold temperatures the emission of the greenhouse gas increased slightly despite the strong capital cities and their heavy use of electronic devices and automobiles. It is because these countries mainly use the means of renewable energy and less carbon intensive fuels that help on the overall energy sufficiency. It is turn causes mild winters in such countries and overall reduction in energy for heating.
Minimizing the effects of carbon emission
As per Raupach et al. (2014), it is known that one of the increase in carbon pollution is due to transportation and despite the fact that African countries are low contributors to the worldwide production of carbon emission however these regions suffers the same as any sub-urban cities like United States or Russia. This is mainly due to the effects of fossil fuel and the poorly maintained roads for transportation. The researchers show that there have been almost 50 thousand deaths over the world due to the effects of air pollution in which carbon emission is a crucial factor. Therefore, it can be stated that global warming is an important measure to reduce the overall effects of carbon emission. Economic development is required for the overall reduction of poverty and on the other hand, the effects of carbon emission threaten to undermine the development and thus causes problem to the health of the people and the environment.
According to Lee and Brahmasrene, (2013), due to the slow growth of development in Middle Eastern and African countries, there have been many suggestions by researchers to reduce the overall effect of greenhouse gas so that the environment is maintained. Some measures according to the researchers include the expansion of the use of renewable energy so that people are less dependent of coals or fossil fuels, which are the reason why high amount of CO2 is emitted in most countries. In European countries, despite there are many large urban cities, the overall temperature is much cooler than rest. This is because these countries are a heavy user of non-renewable energy.
Another major factor according to Tang et al. (2015), the increase in vehicle fuel efficiency, this is important because it reduces the measure of going towards the means of oil use that causes pollution. In some countries, LPG gas is used instead of oil in public vechicles, which reduces the emission of carbon largely. It is advised that if the government itself keeps a regulation amount on carbon that users are allowed to emit, then there would be a scale that would maintain the causes and effects. If the government is involved directly then there are bound to be changes in the result. By building an overall clean economy, it is also suggested that by investing in the means of efficiency technological means of energy, industrial approaches helps to plan and draw out a sketch on how to deal with the following factors. Reduction in the means of congestion and reducing the means of transport capacity, it helps to increase vehicle fuel efficiency. When automobiles are properly maintained, it would normally reduce carbon exhaustion and by implementing mass transit projects, it would thereby reduce the number of vehicles on the road. The technology of producing high quality fuel should be used in every country and good roads should be contracted. If there are other means of transportation then people will not be depended on a particular type of vehicle when it comes to transportation. There should not be any compromise when it comes to building a good network on the roads.
Research Philosophy
The concept research philosophy has been considered as detailed analysis of a study. Research philosophy can be categorized into three types, to name, positivism, interpretivism and realism. Vaioleti (2016) is of the opinion that positivism plays a crucial role in respect to research philosophy as it assists in the development of a detailed analysis of a research study. It deserves mention that interpretivism is concerned regarding the activity management as well as function management while realism research philosophy is considered as a type of mixed approach. In order to conduct the research, the theory of positivism will be utilized. As far as positivism research philosophy is concerned, using this type of research philosophy, the investigation of the issue of the study can be conducted in a logical as well as critical manner. In this regard, it must be assured that positivism is obtained from the receptive experience and the analysis is fact based. However, the two other types of philosophies will not be used in the conducting the research as these philosophies are perception based thus these two philosophies might draw different perceptions.
Research design
There are three types of research design; namely, exploratory, analytical and most importantly explanatory (Flick 2015). Among these research designs, analytical type of design is used in order to understand as well as analyze the research study in a descriptive manner. At the same time the exploratory type of research design helps in determining the connection among the two considered variables of the study. Therefore, analytical type of research design will be taken in the study in order to achieve a thorough knowledge of the theories that exist and the two other designs will be rejected to conduct the study.
The entire research will be exclusively depended on primary as well as secondary sources of data. Several interviews and surveys will be the sources from which the primary data will be collected (Smith 2015). Along with that, the secondary data will be gathered from various means of sources that are available in the printed form over the online platforms that is internet. Therefore, both type of data collection method will play important roles in order to carry out this particular research.
Sampling method and size
The method will be used in terms of sampling technique is inclusive of both the non-probability as well as probability sampling methods. In addition to that, simple random method of sampling will also be in use in order to achieve better and clear understanding of the subject of the research. Tentatively, 20 people who work with the pollution control board in order to gain the knowledge of present rate of carbon emission from automobile and the electronic devices. 3 officials of a manufacturing company of electronic devices and automobiles will be interviewed in order to gain the knowledge regarding what are the technological innovations are being adopted in order to reduce the carbon emission.
The quantitative data which will be gathered from several sources like surveys and interviews will be altered into percentage as well as numeric so for the purpose of proceed with the analysis (Gast and Ledford 2014). Graphs and Charts form can be used to convert the data and present them in a pictorial or graphical manner. Similarly, the qualitative data will be evaluated through a thematic approach. All the information which will be collected from the interview will be presented in the written form considering different aspects related to the subject of the research.
Ethical consideration
In order to carry out the research, guidelines regarding ethics will be strictly followed throughout the process. During the collection of primary data, participants will be welcomed willingly and they will be given freedom to contribute. In respect to that the participants will be asked to sign a consent paper in order to assure that they were not forced to participate in the research. Any kind of symbol of the company or the pollution control board on the survey documents will be strictly avoided (Panneerselvam 2014). If needed, authorization letter will be presented. While collecting secondary data, the research paper will include every essential reference in order to avoid the issue of plagiarism as well as to maintain its credibility. On the whole no such approach will be taken to that violet the guidelines of ethics.
Limitation of the study
In accordance with Simonsohn et al. (2017), some limitations will still remain and cannot be avoided despite of having a proper planning. One instance can be given regarding the time frame of the study. Estimated time can be inadequate to complete the whole course of the research. While time horizon is an issue and considered as one of the limitation, avaibility of the data sources can be a challenge ion order to complete the research. In addition to that, the responses which will be gathered from interviews might be felt inadequate in order to reach to the final outcome of the study. The estimated dates for conducting interviews can be postponed due to gaining permissions from the officials. However, it can be said that proper planning of the study can avoid the limitations to some extent in the process of completing the study in a right manner.
